Has science demonstrated that there is no God — or at least no evidence for God? Given the current wave of “New Atheism,” arguing that everything can be explained without recourse to a Creator, it’s important that Christians of all kinds take time to learn why we believe in God.
Catholics believe that while God has revealed himself most fully in his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is “the image of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being” (Hebrews 1:3) and therefore that to understand who God is and what his intentions are, we need to look primarily to Scripture and the teaching of the Church, we also believe that God has revealed himself through his created works (Romans 1:20) and can be known through the use of reason.
It’s important that we learn to defend our belief in God in ways that will be meaningful to those who don’t share our faith in Scripture or the Church — especially as our society becomes more secular. And this is something that we can do. We need not sink into silence in the face of atheist claims. As St. Peter wrote to the earliest believers: “Set apart Christ as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that is in you, but do it with gentleness and reverence” (I Peter 3:15).
