Between coming from a divorced family and his own budding adolescent ego, by the time Derek Rotty was a young man, faith was a long forgotten priority.

But in studying history — not just world and Church history, but the history of his own spiritual trajectory — he began to see that the God he had pushed to the side for years had been with him all along.

Derek shares how his faith and his marriage have helped him to see that despite all the wounds of his family experiences and mistakes of his background, he was always being called to be part of God’s family in the life of the Church.

Raised in a solidly Christian family with experience of a number of Protestant denominations, Sr. Julia’s first exposure to Catholicism came through books about the lives of the saints that she found at the library.

Fascinated by them, she and a friend from school began to ask lots of questions about the Catholic Faith. Sr. Julia shares how that path of prayer and discernment led her first to enter the Church, and then discern a vocation with the Daughters of St. Paul.

How a Church of Christ Minister Became Catholic – Lawain McNeil

Though raised Free Will Baptist, it was as a teenager in a Church of Christ context that Lawain McNeil’s faith caught fire, especially under the mentorship of a basketball coach. Feeling called to ministry, he studied at Cincinnati Bible College and became ordained in that tradition, which was committed to restoring the ideals of the early Church.

However, as he continued to study what the earliest Christians actually believed and how they worshipped, Lawain began to notice several things present in history that were absent from his own belief and worship.

He decided to seek out a spiritual home where all those elements of early Christian doctrine and practice were still living realities; and that search eventually led him to the Catholic Church.

Hindu to Atheist to Catholic – Srishti Gupta

Srishti Gupta was raised Hindu, but had become an atheist by college and was actively trying to convince others to reject religion.

A friendship with a Christian began to soften her towards faith, and when she began to spend time reading the Gospel of Matthew, everything began to click for her, and it started her on an intentional path toward coming home to the Catholic Church.

Norman bin Yazid had a strong foundation of faith in the Seventh-day Adventist tradition, and his love for God and desire to learn and share more about Him led him to pursue a call to ministry.

While serving in ministry, Norman began to ask questions about the relationship between beauty, truth and goodness, and was surprised to find that the Catholic Church — which his Adventist tradition was deeply suspicious of — had compelling things to say about the relationship between faith and reason, and what it means to know, love and serve the God behind it all.

Tyler Pakka had some experience of going to churches as a kid, but it wasn’t until his young adult years, when he was going through some difficulties, that he connected with a Calvary Chapel pastor who started to help him truly open up to faith.

Later, when Tyler’s wife developed an interest in becoming Catholic, it raised a whole new set of questions for him, and he started to see all the pieces of his journey together as one larger story of his lifelong call to be a better husband and father, and ultimately, a joyful and fulfilled Christian.

Over time, he became increasingly frustrated at the lack of agreement among Protestant Christians on major theological issues, from justification to free will to baptism and beyond. That led him to ask the bigger question: what is the historic Christian faith that has been passed down through the centuries, and how did it become so splintered?

Bob Jones, Beauty, and the Catholic Church – Sam Guzman

Sam Guzman’s formation as a Christian ended up bringing him to Bob Jones University, known for its strong Fundamentalist convictions. Interestingly enough, he began working at an art gallery on campus, and that encounter with beauty caused him to ask all sorts of questions about history, theology, and who Jesus calls us to be. Those questions would eventually lead him to the Catholic Church.

Kenny Burchard was a Foursquare pastor for a number of years, but even becoming Christian in the first place as a teenager was a source of conflict in his family, because of his parents’ complicated feelings toward religion.

During his time as a pastor, he began to make several discoveries about Christology, Scripture, history and the sacraments and found himself agreeing with Catholic thought on more and more questions.

Kenny shares how he came to the conviction that it wasn’t enough for him to just agree with the Catholics on all these things; he needed to join them in their communion with Christ.
