Hot off his industry-changing role as the not-Howard K. Stern in the not-Anna Nicole Smith episode of Law & Order, David Cross is once again doing some Serious(!) Acting(!), this time as legendary beat poet Allen Ginsberg in Todd Haynes’ long-awaited Bob Dylan film I’m Not There.

The main hook of the film since it was first revealed is that Haynes is using a whole bunch of actors to play various “incarnations” of Bob Dylan (the running count is Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and Ben Whishaw). But now, after viewing the below clip, the big story is that David Cross looks EXACTLY like Allen Ginsberg!

The Variety blog has an exclusive, un-embeddable trailer for Noah Baumback’s latest film Margot at the Wedding, which stars one-half of the Greatest Band In The World. According to the press release, Black plays “the husband of a young woman who is visited at her upstate home by her sister and 12-year-old nephew.” He also seems to grow a mustache during the film.

Note: Technically, we have no reason to post this. We’re officially an “L.A. comedy blog” and, last we checked, Noah Baumbach doesn’t have a track record of making comedies*, or really making anything outside of New York. But since we really enjoyed The Squid and the Whale so much, we’re looking for any excuse to put this up. And JB’s first big turn as a Serious Actor — unless getting blown up in The Jackal is considered “serious” — is as good a reason as any to post this. Also, the “Mr. Show Serious Actor Counter” is now at two.

*Just to be clear: We thought The Squid and the Whale was the funniest movie released in 2005. But that’s just us.

Video Wednesday rolls on with this quick clip from last night’s “ripped from the headlines” episode of Law & Order, which dealt with the whole Anna Nicole Smith being dead affair. To make the event even more spectacular, the producers of the show decided to have David Cross play the Howard K. Stern role in the whole fiasco, and he nailed it.

In the following clip, Cross answers police questions moments after finding faux Anna’s corpse. It’s a fine performance by Cross — that last cry really brought back memories of our favorite actor/analrapist Tobias Funke — but even we have to admit that he was upstaged by the amazing set design. We have a feeling that room’s going to be the setting for more than one of our nightmares.
