With the reopening next week, this will likely be the last time we send you somewhere other than iO to see iO groups. That being said, we f’ing love these folks.
Imaginary Friends
Sentimental Lady
TAB
Dr. God
Tigerpants
This post brought to you by our sponsor (in spirit), Cocoa Puffs cereal: For hair so healthy, it shines. Also, click the other images for some sick nasty comedy this evening. If you can’t see the events, you’re not logged into facebook. If you don’t have a facebook account, then how do you view pictures of high school kids drinking?
Watch your caloric intake, and don’t eat Trix (they’re for kids!).
Sorry for the terrible earthquake pun, but here’s a little show that’s worth way more than the $0 admission. It’s called “You Didn’t F***ing Pay For This” which is why we assume it’s free, and it’s tonight, Tuesday July 29th at 10pm at 1323 Santa Monica Blvd. “The Room” (The Corner of 14th and Santa Monica). The doors open at 9pm with drink specials, splendiferous comedians (Joe Wilson, Katie Hall, Dave Forseth, Tom O’Keefe, Andrew Santino), extravagant hosts (Steven Benaquist and Jason Boggs), and possibly some jousting? You can check out the facebook event here.
Ok, it may not look anything like this tonight, but seeing funny people joust would still be pretty cool.
Rock the casbah, and don’t stand near glass during the next 5.8.
We’ve heard it from various sources but didn’t want to spread rumors until iO officially announced it, but according to their website the iO theater will be fully operational August 6th. We’ll be there with a drink in hand, assuming the bar isn’t still in this condition:
Enjoy your respective Mondays, and don’t swim in the deep end.
We previously mentioned the comedy rooftop BBQ, and how awesome a combination of these three things would be. Well champs, tonight is the night, 8pm at 725 S. Spring Street. Because it is hosted on a rooftop, you’ll likely want to RSVP on the facebook event or shoot an email to bagladydave [atsymbol] gmail.com.
If you can tear yourself away from the afterparty which is destined to ensue on a rooftop with beer, head on over to 12 Shiny Nickels, where 12 comedians each perform their best five minutes. At least, that’s the idea. As mentioned over on Live Comedy LA the show tends to start late and run long, but when there’s free beer and only $5 to get in, you’ll want to stay late. Their website can be seen here, the facebook event can be seen here, and the real event can be seen at 1501 N. Gardner Street at Sunset, 11pm. Also, for some reason, they made a video showcasing their line-up of comedians:
Spoiler: It’s John Roy, Matt Braunger, Rob Delaney, Simon King, Melinda Hill, Matt Dwyer, Val Myers, Kevin Christy, Holly Mills, Adam Hammer, and Steve Simeone.
Finally, for a third option altogether, we recommend Comedy Meltdown 8. It is this evening, Friday July 25th, at 830pm at 7522 Sunset. Our reasons for recommending such a show includes, but is not limited to the comics (Anthony Jeselnik, Jackie Kashain, Rob Delaney, Brian Zarin, and Robert Yasumura), the host (Blaine Capatch), the sponsor (Asahi), the lack of a cover ($0), and the sweet poster
().
Good luck finding parking, and don’t forget your shift key111
The comedy group known as Your Girlfriend is making jokes tonight at 10 at the Art/Works Theatre in Hollywood, 6569 Santa Monica Blvd. It’s $5, but last time they were handing out free beers for shouting a secret code word hidden in the playbill. Is it still called a playbill if it’s not a play? Maybe you could call it a program… Either way it’s a good deal.
Really, last time we went it was like a comedy jam session ran head first into a Mr. Show episode. There was an overarching theme and some semblance of segues, but what was more impressive than the planned format of the show was the laid back vibe. It was very clear that this was just a group of friends who all happened to be performers and wanted to give the audience some happy good times. For instance, Charlyne Yi sang a song in French. You’re thinking of the French song from Flight of the Conchords, but no, it wasn’t a comedy song. She just felt like singing, and we were glad to support what is probably the most artful comedy scene in LA. Did we mention it’s also really funny?
We’d love to check out this week’s line-up, featuring Jen Kirkman, Kyle Kinane, Kate Micucci, and many more, but we’re finally seeing The Dark Knight tonight. Whooo!
Fight the good fight, and don’t give up (you’ve got the music in you).
Tuesday nights are the Jan Brady of the weeknights. The shows on Marcia Brady Fridays and Saturdays seem to get all the attention and audience members. Since January 2008, Who’s Available gives Jan Brady Tuesdays the love she’s been missing.
The format of the show changes from week to week – the format I caught on July 15 was pure stand up. Frederick Young, creator and host of Who’s Available, started getting the audience engaged in the alley, handing out index cards to be read out loud by randomly selected theatre-goers for his bit on concerned netizens against McDonald’s
pro-gay agenda. Some of these shouts of quoted homophobia and anti-McDonald’s propaganda were said by goers who had to stop between bites of their Extra Value Meals, thanks to the McDonald’s located around the corner from the Westside Eclectic. In the words of Sandy Danto, another comedian on the bill, it was fat and fragrant.
The night was also educational. Ed Galvez (Punk House) taught us the finer points of bilingual eulogies, bar etiquette, and reptilian-human relationships. Other educators and comedians included Alessandra Rizzotti, Kurt Kroeber, Eric Larnick and John Ford.
Josh from Texas was an audience member whose participation was on par with any midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and who became more flamboyant throughout the show, peaking during show closer Max Goldberg’s set. Goldberg handled the gentle, beer infused
heckling like a professional Marcia.
Who’s Available is The New Jan Brady. Every Tuesday @ 10 p.m. - $5 – Westside Eclectic.
As many of you know, we lost a good friend a few weeks ago. The bar at the iO West Theater was struck and killed by a drunk driver one fateful Thursday afternoon. He is survived by a loving and supportive cast and staff, many of whom are finding it difficult to survive after this senseless loss.
So please, come out and support the family of the deceased. A BYOB comedy show is occuring this evening in the Andy Dick Theater (6366 Hollywood Blvd (enter on Cosmo)), and all proceeds will go to help support the currently out of work barstaff. Doors open at 8pm, with shows as follows:
9pm - Mr. Falcon/Rohan Will Answer
10pm - Dr. God/Tigerpants
11pm - The Happy Time Rainbow Bunny Squad Reunion Show (A must see for those who love the Deconstruction!)
The suggested donation is $10, but really, let’s all reach into our hearts and give.
Because it sounds so off-the-chain hilariously fun party time excellent.
To RSVP for this free comedy/BBQ/party next Friday at 8pm at 725 S Spring Street, click the picture link for the facebook event, or email bagladydave [atsymbol] gmail.com.
Somehow we missed Eliza Skinner’s show at the Comedy Central stage last Tuesday, as well as her sold-out musical improv show at UCB on Thursday. And for that, we are truly sorry, for who doesn’t love smart, funny, attractive women with moustache fingers doing musical improv?
We also have yet to get over to the Sunday Sunday Sunday Show, mostly because it’s Sunday and like everyone else we should be at church. JK-we were hungover all day. We’ll let you know the next time you can catch this show, because it is, to say the least, ballin’. And free.
Finally, even though we did get to mention it, we unfortunately missed Lennon Parham’s ridiculous one woman show. The good news is we’ll be catching it tomorrow night; care to join us? (Click the image for tickets.)
Keep us informed of the haps, and don’t miss any of this awesome com. (Whoo! Abbreves!)
